This blogpost explores the shortcomings of content moderation on Twitter and YouTube. Specifically, the EU DisinfoLab reveals that conspiracy theories regarding the alleged link between COVID-19 and 5G technology are often undetected by the moderation of these platforms. The EU DisinfoLab also underlines that while efforts are being made by these platforms to improve and intensify content moderation, this process remains insufficient and excessively slow. As a result, false information remains available on these platforms for months before being labeled or removed. In addition, the EU DisinfoLab shows that insufficiently mature automated moderation algorithms can be counterproductive.
